Curriculum Vitae

Michelle Sargent is an expert at creating characters replete with quirk, humor, strangeness, whimsy, and freaky otherworldly charm. A multi-disciplinary artist renowned for her versatile vocal and physical performances, Michelle brings to each unique situation her rich background in extended vocal technique, voice over, improvisation, movement, opera, acting and physical theater.

Michelle has worked with Danny Elfman, Aerosmith, Peter Sellars, Debbie Brown, Stephan Haves, Guillermo Gomez Pena, and Sarah Shelton Mann. She can be heard and seen creating strange sounds on movie soundtracks, VO-ing on video games and commercials, performing at concerts, festivals and Operas, and improvising on the Main Stage at IO West.

Michelle started experimenting with voice at an early age, mimicking every sound that intrigued her, from the high-pitched Pterodactyls of "Land of the Lost" to bull-frogs, seagulls, and of course, opera singers! She began her formal training in voice at 16, and holds a degree in Music from California Institute of the Arts, where she trained in classical voice, extended vocal techniques, Indian Sargam and Javanese Pshinden.

In addition to her music education, Michelle studied as an actor and physical performer with Teatro Novogo Fronta, Derevo, and Avner Eisenberg, as well as at Cal Arts and San Francisco Circus Center. Michelle also dedicated several years to the study of Javanese Pshinden and Dance, and lived for 6 months in Surakarta, Java, training with dance and music masters and collaborating with Indonesian artists.

Michelle's special combination of voice and movement skills has garnered her invitations to perform all over the world, both as a soloist and in collaboration with diverse companies. She created characters and headlining acts for Chamäleon Theater in Berlin, Circus Conelli in Zurich and Cirque Hawaii in Honolulu, and premiered works at the Music Next Millennium Festival, Seattle Modern Dance Festival, and Portland Festival of Contemporary Dance. She also toured Germany in site-specific installations with celebrated street theater troupe Grotest Maru, and danced Butoh hanging out of a flying metal sphere with neo-Butoh renegades Ten Pen Chih. She eventually moved to Berlin for 2 years, where she headlined at the Chamäleon Theater as the opera diva with a soul queen alter ego in the critically acclaimed show, "myLIFE."

Michelle currently resides in Los Angeles. When she's not working as a voice artist, actor or singer, you can find her teaching movement/performance techniques and injury prevention to actors, aerialists and opera singers. Michelle is, and always will be, dedicated to provoking audiences with delicate truths, hilarious hijinks, and feisty beauty.
